Description:
Oxiracetam is a more advanced form of the nootropic drug piracetam. These two compounds were synthesized in 1974 by the Italian pharmaceutical firm ICF and made available for sale in 1987. Oxiracetam, a derivative of Piracetam, stimulates the central nervous system, boosts brain metabolism, and noticeably enhances memory retention; it is effective for treating elderly patients who suffer from declining memory and mental function. It is useful in managing brain organic psychiatric syndrome and mental pathological syndromes. It can restore memory and learning capabilities in patients suffering from senile dementia or similar disorders. It is apt for the treatment of neural dysfunction, memory disorder, and intellectual dysfunction after sustaining damage to the brain. Oxiracetam's mechanisms of action are similar to those of Piracetam. It promotes the binding of phosphorylcholine and phosphoethanolamine, increases the ratio of ATP/ADP in the brain; and increases the binding of protein with nucleic acids in the brain. Thus it may improve the memory and learning ability of patients with senile dementia and memory disorder.
Oxiracetam is a structural analogue of piracetam, this compound has enhancing effects on vigilance and memory. Compared to piracetam, oxiracetam shows greater improvement in memory I til et al. (1986) and has been used widely for treating dementia including AD, VaD, MID (Baumel et al., 1989; Dysken et al., 1989), and mixed forms. Green et al. (1992) could not show any difference from placebo in patients with AD. On the other hand, Maina et al. (1989) assessed 289 patients with MID in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial; after 12 weeks of treatment, behaviorally symptomatic patients were found to have reduced with oxiracetam.
Oxiracetam is a 4-hydroxy analog of piracetam with psychostimulant activity; reportedly useful in relieving symptoms of cerebral insufficiency in the elderly.
