Oxiracetam is a more advanced form of the nootropic drug piracetam. These two compounds were synthesized in 1974 by the Italian pharmaceutical firm ICF and made available for sale in 1987. Oxiracetam, a derivative of Piracetam, stimulates the central nervous system, boosts brain metabolism, and noticeably enhances memory retention; it is effective for treating elderly patients who suffer from declining memory and mental function. (1992) could not show any difference from placebo in patients with AD. On the other hand, Maina et al. (1989) assessed 289 patients with MID in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial; after 12 weeks of treatment, behaviorally symptomatic patients were found to have reduced with oxiracetam.



Oxiracetam is a 4-hydroxy analog of piracetam with psychostimulant activity; reportedly useful in relieving symptoms of cerebral insufficiency in the elderly.
